Comparison of Tinies

ave you started to hear whisperings of the words Volks, Dollfie, BJD?

BJD simply means Ball Jointed Doll. A doll with moveable rounded joints strung together with strong elastic cord. These dolls are beginning to gain popularity with collectors. If you’re like me, you may find these dolls wonderfully mysterious but just a bit confusing. The fact that they are imported from Asia, may intimidate us a bit. After all, most dealers are overseas, meaning high shipping costs. And there is a definite language and currency barrier. But a little knowledge can go a long way. I am new to these beauties, so I am learning every day. There is a lot of information to gather. I invite you will join me on this journey!

ecently these unique pieces of art have been calling me.
Born of anime, whimsy and pure charm, these dolls will make you sit up and take notice.

When I saw them in person, they grabbed hold of me and made me realize it was time to do some research.

nd what I found was that these dolls are a hobby in themselves!

The first thing that stuck me was how uninformed I really was!
Let's begin!
               So what is a Dollfie
mistakenly thought all ball jointed dolls were "Dollfies". Dollfies in fact, are the brand name of a specific doll made by Volks Inc. located in Japan. The 'Dollfie' began as a 1/6 scale (Barbie size) doll. The name is a combination of the words 'doll' and 'figure'. The confusion arises because the term "Dollfie" has become a common way of describing a dolls size or sometimes even just to allude to the fact that a doll is an Asian ball jointed type of doll.
This is incorrect, but it is probably the word we hear most often.

*Note - As a beginner, I found this entry into The Volks site much less confusing to navigate.

The first 'super Dollfie' (which was a much larger doll) was sculpted the by Volks creator and artist Akira Enku in 1998 for his wife.
This is indeed a doll line that was born of love.

What is confusing, is a super dollfie size doll, and a super dollfie are really referring to two different items. One is any BJD that is in the 25 inche size range, and the other is specifically the Volks Inc Super Dollfie Doll. Think of it like the word Kleenex. People often call a tissue- a Kleenex, when in fact, a Kleenex is made by only one company. To more confuse the issue, people call it a super dollfie if it fits in that size group no matter what company makes it, but that is technically not true.

ome terms referring to the

size of these dolls include the following:

SuperDollfie size (SD for short) refers to sizes in the range 56-70 cm sizes or roughly 22-28 inches tall.

Mini Super Dollfie size (MSD) are approx. 40-43 cm (15- 17 inches)

Dollfie size 22 -27 cms

Tiny smaller dolls ranging from 14- 27 cms (5- 11 inches).
There are even BJDs that are smaller than 14 cm!

Please notice.. Super Dollfie and Super Dollfie size are two different terms!

Even Ebay is guilty of adding to this confusion. Their catagory for ball jointed dolls is listed as -Category: Dollfies.

Measurements of these foreign dolls are metric
so keep this conversion calculator bookmarked!

Notdoll Lab
has a tiny 10 cm Nari-Pon BJD
That's about 4 inches!
Don't let the size fool you.
This cherub has enough attitude to keep up with anyone!

o illustrate:

Cerebus Project, a company located in South Korea, makes a doll called Delf -Kid who is 42.5cm tall.
And while Delf Kid is not a Dollfie (Dollfies are made by Volks, remember?) it is Mini Super Dollfie (MSD) size.

e're getting it now, aren't we!!?

hich brings me to my second error. I thought all ball jointed dolls were big!
While it is true that some are quite large, as we have seen above, some are quite tiny.
Let's talk about size.

If we look at the Volks Inc. site, we can see they produce ball jointed dolls that are 1/6th scale (22-27 cm - the original official dollfies).

They are Barbie/Fashion Royalty size. These have more of a the "fashion doll" body many of us are used to. You can customize these yourself by painting and some models even have tiny glass or acrylic eyes to insert.

If you prefer the work done for you they also offer Dollfies called Who's That Girl.

Here is Fashion Royalty
Traveler by Nature(L)
Shown next to a Volks
Dollfie(R) body

Volks Dollfie bodies are lighter weight,
but have more points of articulation.

A Dollfie head ready for a repaint.
This particular style looks very anime.

This is the Dollfie body wearing Travelers dress.
Hips fit, bust fits.
However this Dollfie is shorter waisted. Notice the extra room at the top of the shoulders.
Dollfie shoulders are also narrower.

Here is Fashion Royalty Traveler
with my Super Dollfie size (SD size) Dollshe (company name) Hound (Doll Style).
So students, what does this tell us about
this BJD?
That's right, he is about 23 inches tall!
I wanted to show you him without a wig
he looks MUCH different.

Luts ( is the online store) /Cerebus Project (is the manufacturer)
/Delf Lishe (is the doll model)/ MSD size (is the size -22.5 inches)
Luts Faceup (make up was done at the factory by Luts artists)

ecause of my many isconceptions,
at first glance I had dismissed them.
                    The turning point for me
                        was seeing one in person.
Once I saw the lowing complexions
                                     their soulful lifelike eyes,
                                                 I was intrigued.

hen I found out they wear wigs. (Oh the possibilities!)
         What?..
You can change those beautiful eyes to any color
and style you can ream of.. Oh my!
                         And wait..they can stand alone,
and pose in a billion positions?

ait have I reached doll heaven?

Well..yes
and a tiny touch of no.....

These works of art do not come cheaply.
but then again, money isn't an issue in heaven is it?

s a general rule of thumb the prices increase with the size.*
We are talking about prices which can exceed 1,000 dollars for the largest or most sought after.
Perhaps even much more for a very limited or desirable doll. Prices on the secondary market are usually not lower than original prices.
Limited Edition sizes and limited availability cause them to on the whole, retain their value.
Most dolls come nude with a pair of eyes ( these are called default eyes). So in addition to the price of the doll there are other costs to consider.

  • custom 'faceup' (which is what the face paint/makeup is called) done before shipping will cost extra.
If you wish the faceup to be done by a popular artist after you get the doll, it will certainly cost more.
Many, many collectors opt for trying their hand at painting, which is another alternative.

  • o you want those 'special' pair of dreamy eyes? You will pay extra for those as well.
They can be ordered at the time of purchase from some companies, or you can buy them later

  • ow how about that naked doll you just got?
Clothing costs are not much higher than most collectors are used to.
However, remember, these companies are in Japan and Korea which means shipping costs to be considered.
Ebay is becoming a popular source for people looking for local shipping.
**Something to be aware of - although heights are similar from company to company, body types vary greatly.
Often clothing made for a particular doll cannot be easily worn by other types. Even ones in the same height range.

  • hoes can be pricey, but boy are they cool! Platforms, mary janes and boots abound and are often made of real leather.

  • he MSD and SD size are much easier to sew for, if you're so inclined. But...and this is a big but...
there aren't a lot of readily available patterns out there. This may take creating your own patterns,
commissioning someone to do the work for you, or tweaking patterns already out there for your specific doll.

*Just a general guideline, as with all dolls limited availability or particularly popular editions drive some prices higher

ow before you go running for the door and say no way, let’s talk about it… from one obsessed doll collector to another.
It isn't unusual to spend hundreds of dollars on our dolls, be it giftset, limited editions or rare items.
The price of these dolls, isn't much more than the total of a few purchases of other types of dolls.
And I have heard it said that just one of these dolls is enough for many collectors. They are THAT satisfying.

also feel a special camaraderie with others who saving their pennies just like me.
In fact, many owners/future owners actually state in their signature lines on bulletin boards who they are saving for and how much they have saved so far.

For example it is quite common to see someone's signature line read:
Signature:
Home
SALE!!
: Haute Hound -Pharaoh, Lishe-Phoenix

Waiting for : Tender Zen
Saving for SI $198.67 / $309

This is what it means:

--I already have a Haute Doll Magazine special Hound doll named Pharaoh. I also have a Lishe named Phoenix - at HOME SALEwith me.
--The icons that say Hound and Lishe are just for fun and color!
--I have ordered and am waiting for Tender Zen to be shipped to me.
--And I have 198.67 saved towards the price of $309.00 I need to buy a Si doll.

This is my Haute Hound
named Pharaoh
This is my Cerberus Project Lishe
named Phoenix

eople commonly talk and share their ideas on line about how they save money for this investment. Some taking a year or more to save for one particular doll.
Could this also add to the pleasure once you actually get it? Collecting these dolls seems focused just as much on the process, as the final arrival. This reflects traditions deeply rooted in the Asian Culture. Take time and appreciate your decision every step of the way.
When ordering directly from a company, it can take months to get your doll. The waiting time is used to prepare for arrival. Making garments, ordering eyes. Many times a ceremony is performed by the dolls owner, welcoming them Home
SALE!!
. These can be performed by the new owner (or often called, guardian). At Volks, in Japan, ceremonies are performed officially.
Delivery of the doll by courrier is usually accompanied by a photo shoot. From the first sight of the box, to the introduction to other 'siblings' in the house already.
Which, by the way are often posted online for everyone's ooos and ahhhs.
tock is usually replenished slowly. Hand crafting each item is time consuming.
Anticipation is always high. The Asian culture - ever present in all aspects of this hobby
is apparent in thought process, the saving, the choosing, dressing, caring for and photographing these dolls.
All are approached with a certain reverence.

any people talk of not bonding with their selected doll once they arrive.
At this price tag, I advise to look carefully at what is out there before you make a choice.
Take your time. Do not pick a doll just because it is cheaper or what you can afford right now.
Patience, grasshopper, patience! That special doll is out there. Take time to think, to dream.

Look at the wigs, the clothes. Investigate types of eyes, get inspired. What do you want your doll to be?
There is a large variety of face sculpts. So many different looks can be acheived with faceups.
From very anime to delicate pouty elves. Many lend themselves to a Goth or punk look.
Some are little innocent boys, some adolescent girls.
There are soldiers and warriors,
dominatrix and tiny cherubs.
Vampires abound.

Your heart must be your guide!

ho will call to you?

They are true orks of rt.

and crafted, hand painted, lovingly packed and shipped.
They are a feast for the eyes.
elicate details, each one so carefully crafted.
The resin seems to glow with life.

........Their eyes sparkle.......
.............and somewhere in there..............
..........the agic.........

......he magic that each one of these individuals possesses.

I call them individuals for a reason. There is something extraordinary about them. If you peek in on any BJD bulletin board, chat room or website, you will find people referring to their dolls by name. Even the companies refer to them as 'your daughters' and 'children' on their sites. You will hear what the dolls think of their owners. Some have relationships with other people's dolls.

ach one has an entire back story (history) created by his or her owner, inspired by the doll itself.

Much like the story line and cards included with Fashion Royalty dolls, these dolls have a life story to tell. And each owner will be happy to share theirs with you. Often times with elaborate pictorials and blogs. Owners take their wards on vacation, to the park, out to eat, even to Disneyland, much like you would real children. For the most part, the dolls do the talking and the owners take a back seat.

Who can put a price on magic?

Lishe in a fur wig.
You can make your own wigs from faux fur!
This is the same wig that is shown on my boy above.

few interesting tidbits in closing~

Many collectors have arrived at BJD through Anime and Manga (anime comics) and not through doll collecting. This breathes some new life into collecting, in the form of a different demographic group. The group has members that are young, many still living at Home
SALE!!
. Many of the dolls and fashions reflect a bright youthful attitude!

The tides are beginning to turn and doll collectors are realizing what they have been missing, (much to the dismay of many of the original collectors who would like to keep this their own fantastic secret!).

Volks is opening it's first store in Los Angles CA this fall. Shipping inside the United States!!

There is a language difference and many Asian BJD sites are either not in English at all or a bit harder to understand by English speaking visitors. I have found that the Google language translator is helpful at times. I've bookmarked that one too!

You will want to know how much things cost. Most sites list prices in YEN. Here is a currency converter to help you. Exchange rates fluctuate, so prices will too.

In looking at the pictures on this page I'd like to bring your attention to a few points.
I currently own 2 bjds and 3 wigs and not many clothes. I have achieved quite a few looks, and I haven't even thought about changing the eyes yet!!
Of course it's not all my doing. Ask the dolls. :)

Somehow, and don't ask me how.
OK ok.. don't make me say "magic" again..
but these dolls expressions seem to change.
               Happy, aloof, thoughtful, sly..
                                No wonder they seem alive.

I hope that you have enjoyed and learned from this article.
In future issues I hope to cover topics such as:

What do you mean I have to sand my doll?
Sueding joints?
Restringing - Or Is that my doll in a hundred pieces?
Clothing options (including free patterns)
Making wigs
Doll customizing, and much more!

Are you interested yet? I can tell you I am. I’m on my second BJD, and I’ve never been happier with a doll purchase!
Look at some eye candy on these sites and meet me back here in the next issue!!
